How FIFAe Is Working On Its Vision of Community Well-Being

  • Over 400 teams and players have been protected by the Social Media Protection Service during the FIFAe Finals 2023

  • Dedicated partnership with Ditch The Label to fund support mentor hours for mental health

  • Part of the FIFAe Good Game Promise to change the scene for the better

Navigating the digital landscape often brings a positive experience, though it sometimes comes with the challenge of online incivility or unexpected online abuse. Because of this, FIFA has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its global community. At the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, FIFA unveiled the Social Media Protection Service, designed specifically to shield players, teams, officials, and fans from online abuse, and allow them to focus on enjoying FIFA events and FIFA related publications.

What is the Social Media Protection Service?

The FIFA Social Media Protection Service takes the following measures to combat online abuse:

Monitor: The tool continuously scans public accounts for any signs of discriminatory, derogatory, or threatening comments.

Moderate: With the requisite permissions from account owners, it can instantly hide abusive or offensive remarks, providing immediate protection.

Report: This tool takes a proactive stand by reporting any comments that breach the terms of service of various social media platforms.

Social Media Protection Service on FIFAe

Not only was this tool implemented during the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2022™ and the FIFA U-20 World Cup Argentina 2023™ - but it has also been implemented in the FIFAe channels and FIFAe initiatives.

The Social Media Protection Service was introduced into the FIFA esports scene during the FAMEHERGAME boot camp for female players and was also implemented successfully during the FIFAe Finals 2023 evidencing its efficiency:

  • Over 150,000 posts and comments were analyzed.

  • 2,200 were flagged for in-depth review.

  • Over 400 accounts were protected, shielding teams and players from various forms of online abuse (racism, sexism, xenophobia, and others)

FIFAe and 'Ditch the Label'

In furthering its commitment to online safety, FIFA has partnered with 'Ditch the Label' a leading global anti-bullying and mental health youth charity, to offer comprehensive mental health resources to the FIFAe community. This collaboration emphasizes FIFA's dedication to maintaining a secure digital landscape.

Thanks to this partnership, participants of the FAMEHERGAME bootcamp received a session from Ditch the Label, in which they learned about tools and strategies to take care of their own mental health and support other female players in the process. Additionally, over 900 support mentor hours for community members were funded by FIFAe as part of this partnership, and educational content on FIFAe channels were some of the preventive measures that the partnership took to educate and raise awareness on cyberbullying.

Alongside the Social Media Protection Service and the 'Ditch the Label' partnership, FIFAe consistently works towards fulfilling the Good Game Promise, which focuses on promoting the well-being of players, a healthy community, and sustainability for a healthy planet.
